7 Arrested in New York Charged With Threatening Police

TIME

Seven people have been arrested in New York and charged with making threats against police officers.

The arrests come after the killing of two patrolmen who were shot in their squad car on Dec. 20, Bloomberg Businessweek reports.

Police spokesperson Officer Sophia Mason said six were charged with making threats of a terrorist nature through social media or in phone calls to police.

The seventh, 38-year-old Elvin Payamps from Queens, was overheard talking on his phone about killing police. He was arrested on Wednesday on charges of marijuana and illegal gun possession.

Mayor of New York Bill de Blasio has asked people in the city to report any threats against police that they see posted online.

Wisconsin Man has Same ‘Supernatural’ Christmas Tree for 40 Years

This is a good one!!

TIME

A Wisconsin man has had the same Christmas tree for four decades.

Neil Olson put up a Christmas tree for the last time in 1974, when his six sons went to fight in the Vietnam War and he promised not to take the tree down until all the men were back home safe for the holidays, the Marshfield News Herald reports. Olsen hasn’t taken that tree down since.

Olson’s oldest son was injured at war and hasn’t been able to get home to Wausau, WI, from Washington state for Christmas. The tinsel-dripping, ornamented tree, meanwhile, looks just as it did 40 years ago, though its needles are a bit yellowed.

“It’s supernatural, I say,” Olson, 89, told the Wausau Daily Herald. He added that if his sixth son gets home for Christmas one year, he predicts “the needles will drop right off” the waiting tree.

CBS New York

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Flags are flying at half-staff at the New York Police Department’s 84th precinct in Downtown Brooklyn after two officers were gunned down Saturday afternoon while on duty.

The two officers, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, were shot dead as they sat in their marked patrol car at the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Tompkins Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.

Officer Ramos had just celebrated his 40th birthday on December 12. As CBS2’s Dave Carlin reported, Ramos had previously been a school safety officer with the NYPD. He would have been with the force three years this January.

Those who knew him said he loved being stationed with the 84th precinct, Carlin reported.

Ramos leaves behind a wife and 13-year-old son.

“We met the wife of Officer Ramos, we met his 13-year-old son who couldn’t comprehend what happened to his father,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said Saturday.
